Grand Canyon South Rim

A year ago we invited my parents on a trip to our favorite place, Sedona, AZ.  We wanted them to experience the wonder and awesomeness of this special place.  For a year we anticipated this trip.  Our first stop was the Grand Canyon South Rim.  We stayed at a hotel in Flagstaff and got up the next morning, taking the bus around the rim stops.  The day was perfect…not too hot, blue skies and big white clouds.  I’ll let the photos speak for themselves…it was beautiful!

Colorado Side Trip

Part of our fall vacation was spent in the Colorado mountains.  It was unplanned, but I’m glad we went.  We cut our Moab sightseeing short and headed to Monument Valley where we were treated with a beautiful sunset.

We spent some time in Snowmass and in Breckenridge.  It was not yet skiing season so we pretty much had the place to ourselves.  Being right at the end of fall was a beautiful time to be there with the fall color still around yet a bit of snow in the mountains.  The sun was warm enough for us to enjoy the hot tub then lay out in the sun even though it was in the 30’s!  We were treated to a great breakfast with our room.  While in Snowmass, we drove to Aspen and took the ski lift up the mountain where we saw incredible views of the city.

Corona and Wilson Arches

Although the park closures was disappointing to say the least, we discovered other beauties we may not have ventured to had it not been for the closing.  The Corona Arch hike was a mild three hour round trip hike with beautiful scenery all along the way.  This was by far one of my favorite places to see…a hidden gem.  We followed a dirt road to the Wilson Arch with no hiking required.  It was an interesting mound of mountain stuck out in the middle of nowhere.

Govt Shutdown Changes Vacation Plans

The three hour drive to Moab was a beautiful drive along I-70.  We drove along listening to the radio talk shows wondering if we’d be able enter the National Parks we had planned a year to go to.  Arriving in Moab Sunday afternoon, we had an early dinner at a BBQ restaurant and made our way out to Arches National Park.  Unlike many others arriving later in the week, we were fortunate to get that night and the next day in the park before the shutdown closed down all roads accessing the National Parks and Forests.

We missed out on seeing the grand Canyonlands National Park, but found some other local attractions and drives to go on through the remainder of our time.  We did change plans, left Moab early and headed to Monument Valley.

Hanging Lake Trail

Our day started at 4:45 am.  And I’m not a morning person.  We flew 2 1/4 hours into Denver Airport, rented our car and headed west on I-70.  It was a little bit chilly when we landed at 8 am, about 45*.  As you can see, there is some snow in the Colorado mountains.
We arrived in Glenwood Springs, CO about 3 hours later where we found a Brew House for lunch.  Our waitress suggested we must do The Hanging Lake hike.  We followed her advice and went in search of the trail.  Heeding little attention to the signs suggesting taking plenty of water and that the hike was strenuous, we made our way up and up and up.

It never stopped being an incline the entire 1 mile up which took us about 2 1/2 hours to get to the top.  I struggled, having just come off of being sick and still a little congested, up to the top having to stop a lot and catch my breath and bring my heart rate back to normal!  But the lake was worth the effort as it does literally seem to hang up there in the mountain.

That night we went to a natural hot spring pool and recuperated from the hike.

London

London is an exceptional city.  I can see why John has loved it all these years.  I’ll never forget the feeling of awe as I sat in the cab driving into the heart of the city.  So much old mixed in with the new.  We had a wonderful stay, walked ’til I thought I could walk no more and then some!  We spent some time touring with John’s friend, Jason.  We all went to see Les Miserables at the Queen’s Theater…incredible!  We tried lots of new restaurants and pubs, did a few tours, basically crammed in as much as we could in 4 days.
